10 Race Day Fails To Avoid For A Winning Day Out

Giddy up! The races are here.

Each spring hundreds of thousands of once-a-year racegoers dust off their millinery, call upon that trusty suit and flock to the track for Melbourne’s famous Spring Carnival.

Last week Winx made history, winning the Cox Plate for the fourth time, and this weekend it's on to Flemington for Derby Day, the Melbourne Cup, Oaks then Stakes Day quaddie.

But hay let’s be honest here, it’s also a time when many a cardinal sin is committed -- but never fear, this fine filly is here with 10 dos and don’ts that will ensure your day is memorable, but not so memorable it'll make 10 News First's colour package.

1. DO wear comfortable shoes. DON’T be a rookie and debut a new pair of heels at the races.

A block heel or wedge is a great, fashionable yet smart option. Fail to heed this advice and you will feature prominently in this list.

2. DO wear sunscreen.

Nothing worse than getting sunburnt by race four in overcast conditions. And on that note, dress for the weather. It’s Melbourne and four seasons in a day is just standard. Mumma nature is moody, prepare for her.

3. Boys, yes it will get you on the news and in the newspaper the following day but DON’T wear fancy dress.

Save the novelty coloured suits and B1 and B2 costumes for your local footy club Mad Monday.

4. Ladies, DON’T wear body con dresses.

Nightclub attire plus a fascinator does not equal racewear in anyone’s race book. The super tight is for Saturday night not Saturday afternoon.

5. DO pace yourself.

No good flying out the gates if you can’t go the distance and it’s all over for you by 12.24pm #tragic

6. DON’T under any circumstances take off and carry your shoes for this is the ultimate cringe.

Do, if possible, pack a pair of slides or thongs in a small drawstring bag and change into them on departure from the track. That’s the only condition you are allowed to take your shoes off. Stay classy, girls.

7. DON’T piggyback or be piggybacked, lie on the grass or fall asleep.

Also put your rubbish in the bin you dirty bludger.

8. DO pack a stash of essentials in your handbag or clutch.

I’m talking a multi of Band-Aids, sunscreen, makeup essentials for a touch up, portable phone charger and cash (who wants to miss an hour of action queuing in the ATM line?)

9. DO stay hydrated and eat where possible.

It will hold you in good stead for a long day and more importantly the day after. And sorry to sound like your mum, but eat a decent breakfast.

10. DON’T push cops in bushes.
