TIME’s Person of the Year Shortlist Contains A Few Surprises

Sorry, you didn’t get nominated this year either.

It’s that time of the year again – the time of the year when TIME says it’s time to release the shortlist of contenders for TIME Person of the Year. Time.

Let’s have a look at who is in the running this year.

Donald Trump

Donald Trump is top of the list because it’s hard to think about 2018 without thinking about the President of the United States.

Separated Families

Speaking of Donald Trump – Separated Families are on the list. More than 2,000 families were separated at the U.S. border in 2018.

Vladimir Putin

Still speaking of Donald Trump - Vladimir Putin. He had a landslide victory in the Russian elections in March – how does he do it?! – and because of his involvement in the 2016 U.S. Elections, Putin continues to loom large over everything Trump does as well.

Robert Mueller

Yet still speaking of Donald Trump – Robert Mueller. He’s heading up the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 elections. He was also featured as a runner up for TIME Person of the Year in 2017.

Ryan Coogler

Finally, not speaking of Donald Trump – Ryan Coogler. Coogler directed Black Panther, the biggest movie of the year and the third biggest movie of all time.

Christine Blasey Ford

Sadly, speaking of Donald Trump again - Christine Blasey Ford. She became a symbol for survivors of sexual assault as she testified against Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, now Judge Brett Kavanagh.

Jamal Khashoggi

Jamal Khashoggi. The journalist and critic of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was believed to be murdered in Saudi Arabia’s Turkish consultant on the orders of the Crown Prince. His death was met with international outrage and scrutiny of the Saudi regime.

March For Our Lives Activists

March For Our Lives Activists. 17 people were killed in February at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parklands, Florida. Students from the school started the #NeverAgain movement and the March for Our Lives demonstrations across the United States, campaigning for gun control.

Moon Jae-in

Moon Jae-in. The South Korean President met with North Korean President Kim Jong-un in three historic summits this team for talks about the future of the Korean Peninsula. He also brokered the meeting between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump. Oh no, we’re talking about Donald Trump again.

Meghan Markle

Finally definitely not talking about Trump on this one - Meghan Markle. She was an actress, now she’s royalty. It was hard to avoid Meghan Markle in 2018. She married Prince Harry in May. And she continues to be married to him now.

There are no odds on who will be named Person of the Year but as Donald Trump can be linked to eight of the ten persons shortlisted we can probably take a guess who it might be.
