Gay Penguins Adopt Chick From Straight Parents

After straight penguin parents neglected their baby, gay penguin parents leapt to the rescue

There’s been a lot of drama at Denmark’s Odense Zoo, and no, the lions didn’t escape and go on a rampage. It was a much cuter drama. It involves two gay penguins and a chick. And no, gay penguins are not into those kind of chicks. We’re talking about a baby penguin chick.

A gay penguin couple decided to adopt a chick after its parents went for a swim. Well, specifically, the mother went for a swim and it was the male partner’s turn to keep watch.

According to NBC news, zookeeper Sandie Hedgegard Munck said, “He [the father] may have then left, and then the [gay] couple had thought, 'It's a pity, we'll take it."

Who knows what the absent father was doing that was so important? Going for a relaxing shuffle? Chatting to his penguin mates? Or daydreaming about flying?

The zookeepers don’t believe it was a kidnapping, but rather the gay couple thought the chick was being neglected. It was an act of love… or maybe that’s what the gay penguins want us to think. Nobody yet knows if the gay couple may have seen it as an opportunity to take the chick for a ransom of squid.

When the biological parents realized what had happened, there was a showdown! Or as it’s called in the penguin world- a krill-frontation.

After the parents expressed their fury, the baby chick was returned. But it’s not all bad news for the gay couple. After Munck observed the caring nature of the parents, she decided to give them an egg from a female penguin who couldn’t care for it.

So at least now, everybody at the zoo has happy feet. Except maybe the snakes. Because they don’t have feet.
