TIME Magazine Person Of The Year Recognises Killed And Imprisoned Journalists

Killed and imprisoned journalists -- "The Guardians" -- have been honoured by TIME Magazine in 2018.

The magazine issued four different covers with the faces of journalists who have been killed or targeted for their work this year.

Those featured include Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi who was murdered by officials in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Staff from the Capital Gazette, a US newspaper, appear on another cover. Five people were killed when a gunman opened fire on their news room in Maryland.

Finally, the wives of Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo also appear on the cover. Lone and Oo were jailed for seven years for violating the state secret act of Myanmar through their reporting of the Rohingya refugee crisis.

In an essay for TIME, editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said the journalists were chosen "for taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts, for speaking up and for speaking out".

He also noted that as of December 10, 52 journalists have been murdered in 2018.

"This year we are recognising four journalists and one news organisation who have paid a terrible price to seize the challenge of this moment," he wrote.
