  • He arrived in Singapore ahead of the Trump-Kim Summit
  • Rodman and Kim have been friends since 2013
  • It's unclear what Rodman's role is in the talks

Former NBA player Dennis Rodman has appeared on television commenting on the Trump-Kim summit, while crying and wearing a marijuana/ cryptocurrency themed t-shirt paired with a 'Make America Great Again' hat.

Speaking to CNN, Rodman said Trump could succeed in the summit by being "really emotional." He said if Trump approaches the meeting with his "heart on the table" Kim will be accommodating.

"We are moving into the future. I have told people about Kim Jong-un. He is all about the 21st century, he is trying to progress his country," Rodman said.

Things got emotional when Rodman described the backlash he received due to his support of Kim.

"When I went back home I got so many death threats, I got so many death threats ... I believe in North Korea and when I came home, I couldn't go home, I couldn't even go home," Rodman said as he fought back tears.

"I had to hide out for 30 days.... I know things were going to change. I knew things were going to change, I was the only one. I never had no one to hear me, no one to see me. But I took those bullets, I took all of that."

"Today is a great day for everybody. Singapore, Tokyo, China, everybody. It is a great day ... I am so happy. "

The 56-year-old arrived in Singapore on Monday evening ahead of the summit between Kim and Donald Trump.

Sporting a shirt that read 'Peace starts in Singapore,' Rodman said he was "excited to be part of it" when asked about the historic meeting between the two leaders. There has been no indication, however, that Rodman would be involved in the official summit talks.

Donald Trump said just last week that Rodman had not been invited to Singapore to part-take in the talks.

So, Why On Earth Is Dennis Rodman In Singapore?

Well, Rodman and Kim have been friends since 2013, when the 56-year-old travelled to North Korea to host basketball exhibitions with Vice Media correspondent Ryan Duffy. Rodman met Kim and declared him a "friend for life."

In July 2013, Rodman told Sports Illustrated, "My mission is to break the ice between hostile countries. Why it’s been left to me to smooth things over, I don’t know."

Rodman told Good Morning Britain in 2017 that he and Kim have a lot of fun together.

"We laugh, we sing karaoke, we do a lot of cool things together like skiing and riding horses," Rodman said.

Since their first meeting in 2013, Rodman has visited Kim in North Korea five times, most recently in June 2017.

What Does Rodman Want to ACHIEVE in Singapore?

Rodman is said to be meeting Kim at his hotel in Singapore but this hasn't been confirmed. There is also no official word on the role Rodman will play in the talks.

Rodman told Good Morning Britain in 2017 that he'd aim to "straighten things out" between the U.S. and North Korea.

While Rodman's role in the summit is unclear, one thing is for certain -- the historic meeting between Trump and Kim will be full of intrigue and theatre as the entire world watches on.
