Netflix Might Start Playing Ads During Your Next Bingewatch
What is the world COMING TO?!
It's finally happened -- and this is some terrible news -- Netflix has been testing ads.
The ads were first spotted by furious Redditors who noticed the streaming platform began to play ads for its original series Insatiable during other shows.
"After the episode ended I got a screen saying 'More Shameless up next...' then the title card slid off screen and it continued with 'but first check out Insatiable' and started playing the trailer," user PhantomMaggot explained.
Netflix confirmed in a statement to Ars Technica that they were testing "recommendations between episodes" (aka ads) saying they hoped it would assist in content discovery, but that it was all still on a trial basis and have only been confirmed in the U.S. and U.K.
"We are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster," the statement read.
"A couple of years ago, we introduced video previews to the TV experience, because we saw that it significantly cut the time members spend browsing and helped them find something they would enjoy watching even faster."
While initial claims on Reddit conflicted as to whether the ads were skippable or not, the Netflix spokesperson confirmed all ads for Netflix originals were skippable.
The ads will reportedly only be for Netflix content, and will only be appearing for a select portion of users -- at least until they decide if it's worth a wide roll-out based on how those in the test respond to the ads.
Users are obviously outraged with the idea of having to lean forward, find one of your many, many remotes to slam another button and skip through the 100th promo for Netflix's latest docuseries about some murder.
If you're really keen to opt out of the possibility of being included in the testing, Netflix does have an opt-out feature.
