'Phar Lap Of Yachting' Wild Oats XI Takes Out Sydney To Hobart Line Honours

Wild Oats XI has taken out its ninth line honours.

The super-maxi overtook defending champion Comanche early on Friday morning, after what has been considered one of the tightest races to the finish line.

Comanche and Black Jack are still neck and neck in the battle for second place.

Wild Oats XI reached the finish line one day and 19 hours after taking off from Sydney on Boxing Day in the 74th edition of the race.

The team released a statement on social media moments after reaching Constitution Dock, thanking Skipper Mark Richards and the crew.

"It's been a tough few years for us but today we've made history."

Richards addressed the media on Friday saying it was a "redemption" for the crew and said he couldn't be prouder of his team.

"We're just so happy with the result," he said, also taking a moment to congratulate the three other super-maxis who were hot on their heels throughout the race.

"And Wild Oats XI... what an Australian icon, 14 years old and to do what she did today was amazing."

It's set to be a fairytale finish for the Wild Oats XI crew after the team were last year sensationally stripped of their title, following a controversial near collision in Sydney Harbour.

The Wild Oats XI and Comanche rivals battled it out at the top during the gruelling 2018 race, trading the lead throughout the first day.

More to come.
