Ajax Goalkeeper Defends Self From Exploding Firecracker Thrown Onto Pitch

A goalkeeper had to shield himself from a firecracker that exploded next to him during a football match in the Netherlands.

Andre Onana was metres from a firecracker thrown onto the pitch by a fan at the Stadion Galgenwaard during his side's 3-1 victory over Utrecht on Sunday.

The Cameroon born footballer, who plays for Dutch club Ajax, was seen shielding his face as it exploded, surrounding him in smoke.

He wasn't injured, but play stopped for around 10 minutes.

Utrecht fans had been pelting the goalie's area with bottles and plastic cups throughout the match.

"It's football. In life, you can't control everything" Onana reportedly said after the match.

"Sometimes it happens and then I have to be strong and stay focused. I go on holiday now and enjoy it with my family. I have some Christmas presents for the kids, so it's gonna be nice."
