Stephanie Gilmore Wins Seventh World Surfing Title

Australian Stephanie Gilmore has won a record-equalling seventh world surfing title, matching countrywoman Layne Beachley.

Gilmore took on the waves at Honolua Bay and won.

Gilmore's title was secured when her only remaining challenger, American Lakey Peterson, failed to progress past the second round of the season-ending Maui Pro in Hawaii.

Peterson watched as she matched Beachley's record, without even getting into the surf.

Queenslander Gilmore advanced to the third round earlier on Monday with a dominant round one heat win.

Gilmore was ecstatic with the win, she  said it was 'unbelievable'.

“It is an honour to sit beside you Layne. To equal you is such an honour” Gilmore said.
