If you're having a bad day, just know it probably couldn't be much worse than J.R Smith's.

What you need to know
  • Cleveland Cavaliers took on the Golden State Warriors for Game 1 of the NBA Final Series.
  • J.R Smith wound down the clock thinking his team were in the lead.
  • Social media went into overdrive as fans reacted to the novice mistake.

Social media went into overdrive on Thursday night when one of the worst decisions in basketball history was made by Cleveland Cavaliers player J.R Smith.

It was the NBA Finals Series, and LeBron James' Cavs took on the Golden State Warriors for Game 1, and it all came down to the dying seconds.

Smith wound down the clock by dribbling the ball out of the circle after gaining the rebound of teammate George Hill's failed free throw. Only problem, his team wasn't actually winning.

The scores were drawn at the end of the regulation period, and the Warriors went on to win 124-114 in overtime to take a 1-0 series lead.

Cue disbelief and horror from his teammates and fans alike.

The only person who would be remotely pleased with the comical events would be George Hill, who missed the biggest free throw shot of his life.
