Man Denies Raping Tinder Date On NYE

A man told a Tinder date he allegedly raped in a Brisbane CBD unit during New Year's celebrations he was "trying to push her limits".

Christopher Nicholas Bassett is being tried for three counts of rape in Brisbane District Court over the five-hour encounter with the then 19-year-old woman early on January 1, 2017.

Prosecutors say the woman was open to having sex with Bassett when she went to the building unit overlooking the Brisbane River, believing he was "good-looking".

The pair engaged in sexual acts soon after meeting, but he allegedly became increasingly violent.

He twice forced his penis in her mouth and once in her anus, the court heard, as well as slapping and choking her, leaving her with neck, breast and buttock bruises.

When his alleged victim objected to his violence and began crying, he became "apologetic and gentle" before escalating into rough sex again, according to the Crown.

"She'll say (in giving evidence) he told her he was sorry and was trying to push her limits," crown prosecutor Ben McMillan said in opening submissions on Tuesday.

"She'll say never in the course of this evening did she discuss with the defendant they were going to have rough sex that night or that she wanted to have rough sex with him, or indeed at all."

During a phone call with her two days later, Bassett said his behaviour during their meeting was "so not like me" but he did not deny the alleged anal and oral rapes, the trial heard.

"(The victim) confronts the defendant with what happened that night, including the 'surprise anal'", McMillan said.

"He is apologetic and tries to smooth things over.

"Over the course of the conversation, the defendant says he is sorry nine times. He says it is out of character."

When she said there wasn't consent, he replied: "For sure."

Bassett pleaded not guilty to all three charges on Tuesday, with his defence lawyer arguing he believed there was consent.

The woman was "happily laughing" throughout their meeting and when the sex got too rough, Bassett would ease back, the court heard.
