Aiia Maasarwe's Alleged Killer Fronts Court As Details Of The Attack Remain Withheld

A 20-year-old man accused of the rape and murder of international student Aiia Maasarwe has fronted a brief court hearing.

Codey Herrmann looked down for most of his second appearance at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday since being charged with one count of murder and one count of rape.

He was arrested on Friday in the Melbourne suburb of Greenborough, two days after Maasarwe's body was found near a tram stop in nearby Bundoora.

The 21 year old made no application for bail during the hearing, while the prosecutor requested specific details of the alleged attack on the Palestinian Arab of Israeli citizenship be withheld until police passed them onto her family.

"The informant wishes to have that dealt with in a sensitive manner before it's given to media," he said.

Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt approved the request.

"It would be very confronting for the family to be made aware of those specifics through media reports," he said.

Maasarwe was returning home from a comedy gig in the city when she was attacked last Tuesday night. Her body was found near a shopping centre in Bundoora, a short distance from where she got off the Route 86 tram.

Aiia Maasarwe was found dead in Bundoora on Wednesday morning.

The court heard it is Herrmann's first time in custody, with Magistrate Klestadht noting he "may be vulnerable because of [his] age and appearance".

Police have been given 12 weeks to compile their brief of evidence.

He will appear via video link for a committal mention on June 7.

Meanwhile, another vigil is being planned for the young woman, with Melburnians set to line the thoroughfare that would have been her walk home.

The Victorian coroner is due to return Maasarwe's body to a funeral director on Monday afternoon for repatriation, AAP reports.
