Santa Hat-Wearing Thief Steals Wheelchair, Leaves Man Stranded In Toilet

A man was left stuck in a public toilet after a thief in a Santa hat befriended him then allegedly stole his wheelchair.

Police have released CCTV images in an attempt to identify the man behind the theft, from Melbourne's Federation Square.

They say the culprit started a conversation with the victim at Flinders Street Railway station on Sunday morning before helping him to a toilet on Birrarung Marr.

The man -- who was wearing a Santa hat at the time -- then allegedly stole the victim's chair and made his escape.

The wheelchair user was left abandoned in the toilet for an hour before another member of the public finally came to his aid.

The man allegedly responsible for the theft was seen heading towards Batman Avenue with a number of shopping bags attached to the electric wheelchair.

He's been described as having a Caucasian appearance and being aged in his early 20s, while also wearing a Santa hat, black jumper, camouflage pants and white runners.
