Parents Of Nine-Month-Old Baby Girl Found Dead On Beach Assisting Police
A baby believed to be nine months old is dead after being found near the shoreline on a beach at Surfers Paradise on Queensland's Gold Coast.
Police confirmed on Monday morning that a 48-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were assisting with enquires.
It is believed at this time that the pair are a couple, and that the child belongs to them. Police also confirmed that the couple were known to police.
"It's an extremely tragic event," Detective Inspector Marc Hogan told media on Monday morning.
Police spent the morning combing the beach, and will now be looking at CCTV to determine the events leading to the baby's death.
"By this afternoon, I'd say we'd have a lot more information," Hogan said.
Emergency workers were called to the scene near Staghorn Avenue, the Esplanade, around 12.30am on Monday after a member of the public found the child.
They performed CPR but were unable to revive her.
A crime scene has been set up and detectives are trying to identify the child, the cause of death and how she came to be on the beach.
But it's understood the baby had no major visible injuries. An autopsy will be carried out.
The spot where she was found is just one kilometre from Cavill Avenue in the heart of Surfers Paradise.
