A 41-year-old man has been charged over an alleged armed robbery in Sydney's south-west.

Hassan (Sam) Ghamrawi, 41, was arrested following a tense standoff at a unit in Gladesville on Saturday morning.

Police had been investigating an alleged armed robbery at a brothel in Villawood about 12.15am on Friday -- where a man threatened an employee before stealing cash.

Investigators stormed the Gladesville property after a tip-off that Ghamrawi lived in the garage.

Neighbours said they heard loud knocks and shouts from officers demanding he present himself early Saturday morning.

The 41-year-old was found inside the unit and arrested around 10am

He is due to face charges including robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon and illegal firearms possession as well as five outstanding warrants for unrelated matters in court on Sunday.
