Downloaded more than 11.6 million times worldwide, it stormed iTunes podcast charts around the world.

It is currently the number one on the Australian iTunes podcast list, and also reached number one in  New Zealand, the U.K..

It was also the first Australian podcast to go number one in the U.S.

But it has had a real impact on the investigation back in Australia, with the NSW Police Force setting up Strike Force Southwood in response to the revelations in the series.

The Strike Force will "investigate historical sexual assaults and student-teacher relationships at high schools on Sydney's northern beaches," the Australian said in a statement.

An apology has been offered to Lyn Dawson's family by NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller, and a commitment to continue searching for her body and investigate her probable murder.

Her husband Chris Dawson, a high school teacher, is the prime suspect in the case, after it was revealed he was having an affair with a teenage student, Joanne Curtis.

He reportedly moved Curtis into his marital home two days after Dawson's disappearance and married her shortly afterwards.

The podcast will return should further developments be made in the case.
