Australia's Forgotten Serial Killers

Unknown Aussie Serial Killers (Who Aren't Ivan Milat)

Australia has a tragic history of depraved serial killers. But not all of them make the same headlines as the Ivan Milat's of this world.

Here's a few of the worst criminals in recent memory.

The Mutilator

Nicknamed 'The Mutilator', William MacDonald was responsible for a series of gruesome murders in Sydney between 1961 and 1962, mutilating the genitals of his male victims. He threw the genitalia of one of his victims, Alfred Greenfield, into Sydney Harbour, but placed the severed genitals of two of his other victims, William Cobbin and Frank McLean, into plastic bags before later disposing of them.

He was caught in Melbourne in 1963 and confessed to the killings, explaining that he had an irresistible urge to kill after being raped as a teenager in his birth country of England.

He was certified insane and transferred to a secure mental hospital, and died just shy of his 91st birthday in 2015.

Derek Percy

Percy was Australia's longest serving inmate until his death from cancer in 2013. He was arrested hours after murdering a 12-year-old girl named Yvonne Tuohy in 1969, and  is suspected of murdering at least eight other children and teenagers, including the Beaumont children Jane, 9, Arnna, 7, and Grant, 4.

He was found not guilty on the grounds of insanity, and remained in custody for the rest of his life. Police were able to confirm that Percy had been in the areas of the murders.

A former policeman who once served with Percy in the navy once described him as "one of the most intelligent people I've met. He is cold, without emotion, and looks straight through you with his crazy eyes."

He also kept diaries throughout his life, recording twisted, violent fantasies about the rape, torture and murder of children -- some of which later appeared to be real.

Mr Stinky/Donsvale Rapist

Raymond Edmunds, also known as 'Mr Stinky' because of his hideous body odour, is currently serving two life sentences for the shooting of 18-year-old Gerry Heywood and the rape and bludgeoning-murder of 16-year-old Abina Madill in Shepparton, Victoria in 1966.

He was also convicted of multiple rapes between the 1970s and 80s, which lead him to be known as the "Donsvale Rapist", and is serving 30 years for those, as well as another 10 year sentence for sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl.

He his believed to have committed more murders and more than 32 rapes, but has denied any involvement.

Mosman Granny Killer

John Wayne Glove, aka the 'Mosman Granny Killer', terrorised older women in the exclusive Sydney suburb of Mosman for a 14 month period between 1989 and 1990.

He was sentenced to six life sentences without parole for the murders of Gwendoline Mitchelhill, 82, Lady Winfreda Ashton, 84, Margaret Pahud, 78, Olive Cleveland, Muriel Falconer, 93 and Joan Sinclair, 60.

He also sexually assaulted multiple older women, either by attacking them on the street or by gaining entry to retirement villages and nursing homes.

Cop Killer

The 'cop killer' Bandali Debs is currently serving four consecutive life sentences for the murders of sex worker Donna Ann Hicks in 1995, sex worker Kristy Harty in 1997, and two Victorian police officers -- Sergeant Gary Silk and Senior Constable Rod Miller -- both in 1998.

Debs was convicted for the murders of Harty and Hicks while he was already serving sentences over the murders of Silk and Miller, with the Hicks conviction coming some 15 years after the murder.

More recently, police have confirmed that he's a "live" suspect in the attempted murder of two police officers in 1994. His nephew, Jason Ghiller, who was driving the car the three shots were fired from, was convicted of reckless conduct nine years after the incident, but the passenger who fired said shots has never been charged.
