Elderly Woman And Son Killed After Car Plunges Into River
Tragedy has struck on NSW's mid-north coast, where a car carrying an elderly woman and her son sped into a river.
The pair drowned in the Macleay River which separates Smithtown from Gladstone north of Kempsey.
Police believe the car was travelling on Croads Esplanade north of Kempsey when it left the road and went into the water about 11.10am on Wednesday.
It is believed the mother and son were on their way to a birthday party just down the road from where they live.
Witnesses told 10 News First the car was performing a U-turn when the car suddenly plunged into the river.
The pair is being remembered as friendly and caring people.
“it's very sad,” one neighbour told 10 News First.
“A very generous person and always willing to help you when they could, very nice people’
The duo has not been yet named because the family have not yet been able to formally identify their bodies.
Local police, Marine Rescue and Maritime NSW began an immediate rescue operation and a Sydney dive crew is currently working to retrieve the bodies.
