Body Found Near Melbourne Shopping Centre Being Treated As 'Suspicious'
Authorities are investigating after discovering the body of a woman near a shopping centre in Melbourne's north.
Police were called to Main Drive near Plenty Road in Bundoora about 7am on Wednesday, after passers-by came across the body.
An area near Polaris Shopping Centre remains cordoned off and homicide squad detectives are on the scene.
Police say the death is being treated as suspicious.
"It's apparent or it seems that the female has been assaulted," Homicide squad detective inspector Andrew Stamper told reporters.
Stamper said with the investigation in its earliest stages, it is unclear whether the woman was sexually assaulted.
The woman is yet to be formally identified and police have not provided an estimated age.
Anyone who may have been travelling on the number 86 tram, which runs from the city to Bundoora, particularly around 11pm and 1am on Tuesday morning are being urged to come forward with any information they may have.
"If they saw anything suspicious, if they saw anyone get off the tram at this location, to contact Crime Stoppers, as I say 1800 333 000, and likewise anyone that may have been passing through this intersection dashcam footage may have just seen something," Stamper said.
"We really need the public's assistance on this one."
