Mystery Boat Found Off SA Coast Identified As Abandoned 'Wild Eyes'

A mystery boat discovered off the coast of South Australia has been identified as a yacht that was abandoned during a round-the-world sailing attempt nine years ago.

The overturned vessel was spied from the air by a tuna spotting plane off the coast of Kangaroo Island on New Year's Eve.

A PolAir helicopter was sent to investigate alongside two commercial fishing vessels.

It has since been identified as the 'Wild Eyes', a yacht that was abandoned in the middle of the Indian Ocean in 2010.

At the time, US sailor Abby Sunderland was attempting to become the youngest person to sail around the world solo.

But she came up against rough seas. On June 10, the boat was dismasted halfway between the WA coast and Africa.

Sunderland was rescued by a French commercial fishing vessel on June 12 after being stranded for 48 hours.

"I'm definitely going to sail around the world again or really give it another try," she said at the time.
