Family Torn Apart By Mother-Daughter Electrocution Tragedy
A mother and daughter tragically lost their lives in a freak accident on their remote family farm 117 kilometres southwest of Cairns.
Tumoulin mother Juanita Bendel, 39, and her 10-year-old daughter Ava were picking vegetables together on New Year's Eve when they both came into contact with an electric fence.
The woman's partner and Ava's father found the pair dead after he returned to the farm at about lunchtime on Monday.
The man and the couple's four-year-old daughter also suffered minor electric shocks from the fence. The couple's second daughter was found running around the property when her father arrived home.
The fence became electrified after it was connected to the bull bar of a semi-trailer while the car battery was charging.
Despite the father's efforts turning off the power and calling emergency services, police Superintendent Geoff Sheldon confirmed the mother and daughter died at the scene of the incident.
“[It is a] horrendously tragic accident," Sheldon told the media.
“It’s just a family tragedy but its such a broader thing than that. Everybody in the community knew them and came to help at a time of crisis, and they’ve all been affected by this."
Juanita is survived by her partner and their two youngest daughters.
A GoFundMe page was set up on Tuesday by family friends.
They aim to raise $10,000 to assist the family of the mother and daughter with funeral arrangements and other financial burdens.
So far $260 has been raised.
