A solo sailor stranded in the Indian Ocean after a storm seriously injured him and dismasted his yacht has been rescued. Abhilash Tomy, 39, spent more than two days adrift before being located by a French fisheries patrol boat and taken to Île Amsterdam, a tiny island in the southern Indian Ocean. He is in a stable condition.

Bill Cosby is set to learn in court today if he will be deemed a "sexually violent predator" under Pennsylvania law, as a two-day sentencing hearing begins for his sexual assault conviction. The disgraced celebrity was found guilty in April of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constant in 2004 and faces anywhere from zero to 30 years in prison.

Scott Morrison has taken a hard-line stance against calls for Australia Day to be moved, describing it as "indulgent self-loathing". Indigenous Australians and allies have long asked for a day of celebration to be moved from January 26, which marks invasion, genocide and the beginning of centuries of institutional racism with real and profound effects today. The Byron Shire Council, which had planned to hold festivities on January 25, will be stripped of its right to hold the ceremonies if moves ahead with plans.

A woman who tried to help at a fatal crash between a car and a motorbike in Melbourne has tragically died, after being struck by another car and killed. The male motorcyclist also died, while all other parties are assisting police with their enquiries. A total of 150 people have died on Victorian roads this year.

Sacked ABC boss Michelle Guthrie is considering her legal options after the board dumped her just half-way through her five-year term. Guthrie said she is "devastated" by the news and that at no point were issues over her leadership raised with her. The board is declining to explain its decision.

Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo has hinted that the long-running medical drama may end after season 16, or that she may leave the series. "I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell," she told Entertainment Weekly, adding that she's excited to try new things and mix up her career. Pompeo has been playing Dr Meredith Grey since 2005.

Hawthorn midfielder Tom Mitchell has won the 2018 Brownlow Medal, beating Collingwood's Steele Sidebottom by four votes. It took more than 21 rounds of voting for the star to secure the win, after Sidebottom led the vote count for a large portion of the night.
