Former NSW Police Commissioner John Avery has died.
A statement from NSW Police said Avery, aged 90, passed away on Saturday, May 19.
Avery was one of the longest serving commissioners in the state, holding the top position from 1984 to 91.
"The thoughts and prayers of the NSW Police Force are extended to the Avery family and friends at this sad time," the statement said.
NSW Police Commissioner Michael Fuller said Avery will be remembered as one of the "greatest servants" to the people of NSW.
"He was a man of incredible intellect and vision who set out to ensure that police and the community worked together to reduce crime," Fuller said.
"We will be forever thankful for his leadership."
Avery is survived by his three children, Sue, Carol, Rick and their families.
Funeral details will be advised once final arrangements have been made.
