'Distraught' Aunt Charged With Murder Of Baby Niece
A woman has appeared in court, charged with the murder of her baby niece.
Sandra Leigh Houston was arrested yesterday, nearly a month after the four-month-old was rushed to Logan Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The baby was transferred to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition but couldn’t be saved.
Sandra Houston was the guardian of the baby after her sister died a few months earlier.
The 35-year-old appeared briefly in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court today.
Speaking outside the court her lawyer Robert Burns said his client has been struggling but is being supported by her husband and parents.
“She is fairly distraught at the moment, she’s very upset about the circumstances,” he said.
Mr Burns would not go into detail about how the baby died or the circumstances surrounding her death.
The matter was adjourned until Thursday.
