Brekky Wrap: 12 Dead After California Shooting And 20 Percent Of Aussies Are Lonely

At least 12 people, including a police officer, have been killed when a man opened fire in a California bar. Authorities have named former marine crops veteran Ian David Long as the suspect in the case. It's believed Long used an illegally obtained gun to open fire on the 150 people in the Borderline Bar and Grill before turning the gun on himself. The police investigation into the incident continues.

More than one-fifth of Australians feel they have no one to talk to or turn to for help, a new study has found. The research conducted by the Swinburne University in Melbourne and the Australian Psychological Society is the first report into the impact of loneliness on physical and mental health in Australia and its preliminary findings will be released on Friday. When asked directly how lonely they felt, over half of respondents said they felt lonely for at least one day in the previous week.

Federal Labor leader Bill Shorten has said the conduct described by journalist Ashley Raper is unacceptable. Shorten said modern Australian society won't tolerate the alleged assault Raper detailed in a statement accusing former NSW Labor leader Luke Foley of, while the pair were are at Christmas event in 2016. Foley resigned as Labor's leader on Thursday afternoon but denied the allegations.

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said he "can't answer" why he was ousted as PM earlier this year. In a special edition of Q&A on Thursday evening, Turnbull labelled the likes of Peter Dutton and Mathias Cormann as "bullies" saying they "engineered the coup" against him. Turnbull also said he doesn't believe parliament is a place that is respectful to women.

Northern Territory Police located the body of a 12-year-old child after an extensive land and air search on Thursday evening. The search for the boy began after the bodies of a 19-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man and their three-year-old son were found 300 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs. The body of the 12-year-old was located 120 metres from the remains of the family. Police are not treating the deaths as suspicious.

Christian woman Asia Bibi has been released from prison after the Pakistani Supreme Court overturned her conviction and death sentence for blasphemy. Bibi has been on death row for eight years after she was found guilty of insulting the Prophet Mohammad. Her release prompted anger from hard-line Islamists so she is being held in a secure location for fear of attacks on her. In Pakistan, Islamists have the power to appeal against court decisions and so Bibi has been blocked from leaving Pakistan.

The ICC Women's Twenty20 first standalone event begins in the West Indies on Friday. The hosts are the defending champions after the victory in India in 2016, while three-time winners Australia remain a strong threat as well. The competition runs from November 9- 24.
