Convicted child killer and rapist Neville Towner, who murdered four-year-old  Lauren Hickson in NSW, has died in Long Bay’s prison hospital. The 52-year-old died two days before he was to find out if he would be granted parole, after spending almost 30 years behind bars. It's understood he died from a suspected heart attack.

A manhunt is underway after a body was found in a barrel on the back of a ute south of Brisbane. Police made the discovery while searching for a missing person at an address in Logan. Authorities are yet to confirm the gender of the victim, but there are reports it was a teenage girl. The suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous and driving a silver Holden Commodore.

Moscow and Washington have struck a deal to soon hold a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting will take place in a mutually-convenient third country with preparations for the summit expected over the next several weeks.

Meanwhile, a wide-ranging "compromise" immigration bill to address the crisis of families being separated at the U.S.-Mexico border has been rejected. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly opposed the latest bill by a 301-121 vote, leaving Congress no closer to solving the issue.

In entertainment news, Joe Jackson, the father of Michael and Janet Jackson, has died aged 89.  He was reportedly in the final stages of pancreatic cancer and passed away early on Wednesday morning. His death comes two days after the anniversary of his son Michael Jackson's death nine years ago.

A rare baby whale has been spied frolicking off the coast of Victoria. The youngster is the season's first confirmed sighting of a southern right whale calf, after being snapped swimming with its mother over three days this week near Portland in the state's southwest.

The Queen's granddaughter Zara Tindell has announced a very special name for her new daughter, Lena Elizabeth Tindall. The name Lena is pronounced "Lay-na" and Elizabeth is in honour of her grandmother, the Queen.

Champions Germany have bowed out of the World Cup after suffering a stunning 2-0 defeat by South Korea. It is the first time in 80 years that Germany has been eliminated in the opening round.
