A woman has been charged over an alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl at a Melbourne train station last month.

The teenage girl was on her way home from school at Newport Railway Station on May 1 when she was approached from behind by a woman who allegedly assaulted her.

Police released CCTV on Tuesday, showing a woman with brown hair tied in a bun, a tattoo or writing on her right thigh and a lower back tattoo.

She was wearing a black singlet, black thongs and a white long-sleeve shirt over her shoulders.

A 32-year-old Williamstown woman handed herself into police on Tuesday afternoon and was charged with sexual assault.

She was refused bail to appear in court on August 17.
