Authorities are urging people to drive with caution as a heavy bank of fog descended on Melbourne overnight,  affecting some flights in and out of the city.

The fog is expected to linger well into late morning, according to Victoria Bureau  Of Meteorology.

Described by Victoria Traffic as 'as thick as pea soup' is expected to cause delays to morning traffic and is affecting some flights in and out of Melbourne.

Virgin Australia said the fog was 'affecting some services across the network'. while Melbourne Airport said their had been 'some congestion' and suggested passengers check with their individual airlines for information on their journeys.
