Julia Roberts Has Finally Spoken About That Iconic Armpit Hair Moment
It was one of those fashion faux pas moments that will live in infamy.
It was 1999 and Julia Roberts on the publicity trail for Notting Hill. Things were going great and she was looking great, dazzling fans in a red sequined dress. Then she decided to lift her arm and wave and BAM everything changed.
For some reason -- possibly because she had better things to do -- Roberts hadn’t shaved her armpits.
The media went wild. Columns were devoted to slamming this multi-million dollar actress who somehow couldn’t afford a cheap disposable razor and do what all women are expected to do -- shave everything so they resemble hairless cats wearing wigs and lipstick.
Now, nearly two decades on from that moment, the 51-year-old has revealed the real reason behind her natural look and girl do we feel you.
Speaking on Busy Phillips’ new talk show 'Busy Tonight', Roberts told the host that, well, she simply forgot.
“I just hadn’t really calculated my sleeve length and the waving and how those things would go together and reveal personal things about me,” she said.
"It wasn’t so much a statement, as it’s just part of the statement I make as a human on the planet, for myself.”
Phillips went on to praise Roberts, telling her at the time she thought it was a “really cool and punk rock”.
The sad part about all of this is that 20 years later, women not shaving under the armpits remains a thing that a lot of society are uncomfortable about.
Take Gigi Hadid for instance.
The model ended up having to explain the reason behind some apparent underarm fluff she exhibited during a photo shoot. Apparently it wasn’t underarm fluff but rather fuzz from the jacket she was wearing.
So glad they cleared that up.
