Taryn Brumfitt's Body-Positive Ways To Love Yourself Every Day

How do you love yourself, let me count the ways...

As a fierce crusader in the #BoPo movement, Taryn Brumfitt is passionate about helping women embrace their bodies and stop body shaming. The body positive champion and director of the award-winning doco Embrace has a new tome, EmbraceYourself: Learn to Love The Skin You're In, which is out now and filled with advice for all women about how to stop feeling like you're not good enough.

We asked her to give us her ten daily (geddit?) things to do to help you love your body and she delivered. Write them down, there will be a test afterwards...

Move your body for pleasure, rather than punishment

Release the endorphins and enjoy how your bodies move. Depending on how I feel, it could be yoga, it could be running, it could be downhill mountain bike riding, it could be swimming, it could be kayaking. Last night, I did a walk with my dog. It just depends on what's going on and I think this is one of the beauties of the Embrace movement, is that there's no hard and fast rules, it's  just how do you feel? How do you wanna move your body? Just do it!

Sing in the car

On your way to work, or after you drop the kids off at school, you often find yourself alone in the car, and it's a great way to  just have that moment of just having some fun. That's something I do every single day on the way to work.

Meditate

It could be a one-minute meditation, or it could be a 10-minute meditation. On the weekend, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed  -- so I just put one on.  Find yourself a guided meditation around relaxation and overcoming overwhelm, or something like that --YouTube has a million different types of guided meditations, and they're fantastic, and free. And it helps.

Dance as part of your daily routine

Have a dance, even if it's just making dinner, throwing the tunes on and shaking your tush while you're cooking the evening meal -- whenever I can find a moment to dance, I will. Just enjoy, just do it.

Sleep enough

Sleep is a really important part of embracing and looking after and respecting your body so I try and get eight hours of sleep a night, so having a lights-out ritual most evenings.

Nourish your body with foods that give you lots of energy

I start my day with blueberries and banana pancakes, and a cold-pressed green juice.

Be mindful about the amount of time you spend on the screen

I just fill my Instagram feed with awesome people, so I'm not seeing any of the trash that most people see -- as in those toxic messages -- so I think it's a really fun and safe space for me to go and hang out and see my friends and see what they're doing and other BoPo leaders around the world.  But give yourself yourself a break from all the messages that tell you you should be anything other than what you are.

Nature should be a big part of your daily ritual

Just get out in the sunshine, get the sun on the skin, even when it's raining, get outside, go to the local nature reserve or just go to the park or go for a walk in nature. It's all about self-care, whether its taking your shoes off and getting  the grass between your toes, or getting up at lunchtime at work and taking two-minute walk around outside.

Practice kindness to others and yourself

That involves smiling at people and just being kind and connecting with someone as you walk past them in the street -- what you put out comes back. So, practice kindness to others, smile, ask people how they are, have a conversation. It's just taking that little bit of extra time to ask, "how's your day today?" It's that real, genuine connection, finding genuine connection even in strangers in your everyday life -- it can take just a minute to do.

Practice gratitude every day

I find reasons every day to be grateful for my body and having that conversation: thanks body, for doing x. That is the essence of everything all things Embrace -- really connecting into what your body does and how your body feels, as opposed to how it looks, it's just striking that balance. I'm not saying don't shave your legs and don't brush your hair and do whatever you wanna do with your body, but just remember how incredible, this body is magical, that's the things that our bodies do, we really don't give them enough credit.
