Natural Ways To Beat Thoze Damn Mozzies This Summer

Mozzies, they're just a right royal pain in the... area.

And there are many ways the experts advise you tackle the little blighters.  But with more and more of us reticent to use chemicals, wouldn't it be lovely if you could zap the mozzies with something other than a fly spray?

Even though the experts say that if we're a warm blooded animal who breathes out carbon dioxide (and yes, that is all of us) then we can expect to get targetted at some point, naturopath Lisa Guy, who founded Bodhi Organic Tea, says there are some things you can do to turn them away... Like drink and eat the right things.

"Apple cider vinegar can be used to repel insects. You can either rub it on your skin or drink it added to water or hot apple cider," she told 10 daily.

"Eating garlic can also help fight off mozzies. Garlic contains an active compound called allicin which gives garlic its distinctive scent. This scent is released through our pores when we consume garlic. Onion also contains allicin. You can also take garlic capsules as a mozzie preventative."

And lemongrass is also handy as it contains citronella which is a well known natural bug deterrent often used in candles.

If you're not a fan of those -- a high dose of vitamin B1 (thiamine) is also thought to help make you less appealing to mosquitoes. "The excess thiamine is excreted through the skin via your sweat which changes your skin's scent," said Lisa.

According to  Lisa there are a few things you can stop eating or drinking or, well, DOING, if you don't want to get bitten.

"Mosquitoes are more attracted to beer drinkers, according to a West African study," she said.  "And eating a lot of sugary foods can also make you a mosquito magnet.

Pregnant women are also more appealing to mosquitoes possibly due to them giving off more carbon dioxide than non-pregnant women, which attracts mosquitoes. Larger people also emit more carbon dioxide."

So no drunk sex, then people.

If you feel like you do need to spray yourself with something to ward off any nasties, Lisa has some tips for natural mozzie repellents that work.

"Researchers have found lemon eucalyptus to be the best natural mosquito repellent," she told 10 daily.

Other essential oils that have been found to deter mosquitoes are things like lavender, lemongrass, citronella, tea tree, geranium and rosemary."

You can even try making your own natural bug spray:

Ingredients:

  • 30 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil
  • 30 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 30 drops of citronella essential oil
  • ½ cup witch hazel or apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup water

First, pour witch hazel and essential oils into a spray bottle and shake well. Then add water. Shake well before use. Spray on skin and clothes when you are going outside to help repel mosquitoes. Stores in the fridge for 2 months.

And worst-case scenario, if you do end up getting bitten -- goddammmmm it!  --  here are some natural topical treatments to prevent that dreaded itching and swelling.

"Rubbing either ice or soap on your bites can really help reduce itching," advised Lisa. "Or you can try putting lemon juice, vinegar, witch hazel, baking soda or oatmeal on bites -- but don’t apply lemon juice or vinegar if you have broken skin. You can also make a calming paste out of baking soda and witch hazel and apply to bites."
