Eighties Babe Brigitte Nielsen Is Pregnant At Age 54

It’s baby number five for the glowing mama.

Brigitte Nielsen is radiant. Draped in a cream form-fitting dress with her blonde hair swept back from her barely made-up face, the actress looks relaxed and happy in a May 28 Instagram post.

But that’s not the real reason behind the 80’s icon’s glow. Nielsen is pregnant. About eight months along by the looks of her bump. And she’s 54 years old.

The Beverly Hills Cop II star -- who was once married to Sylvester Stallone -- captioned the photo ‘family getting larger,’ and that is very true. Nielsen is mum to four children, all boys, from previous relationships. And new baby -- with current husband Mattia Dessi -- makes five.

Safe to say pregnancy -- and motherhood -- is nothing new for Nielsen. She’s been through it all four times before. What makes this pregnancy different – and no doubt special – is her age.

It can be harder for older women to get pregnant. Fertility rates do drop off rather steeply after 34 years. For women aged 40-44 the fertility rate is just over 15 percent compared with about 127 percent for those aged 30-34. Conception can require medical intervention such as IVF which comes with its own risks.

And all women -- regardless of age -- who use egg donation to become pregnant are at an elevated risk for obstetrical complications, although women 50-plus do not appear to face any greater risk than their younger counterparts, according to a report out of Columbia University Medical Center.

Regardless of the risks, statistics point to a sharp upturn in women who are having babies later in life. In the US in 2013, 13 babies were born each week to mums age 50 and older. And according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, births by women between the ages of 50 and 54 increased by more than 165 percent from 2000 to 2013.

So Neilson is by no means alone -- and in Hollywood at least, having a baby later in life is now the norm. Janet Jackson had her baby boy Elissa when she was 50 in January 2017. Actors Kelly Preston and Geena Davis were both 48 when they gave birth. Rachel Weisz, 48, is having a baby with Mr James Bond himself Daniel Craig later in 2018.

We haven’t even mentioned tinsel town’s older dads. Jeff Goldbulm is 65 and shares two young sons with wife Emilie Livingston. Elton John was 66 when his second son Elijah was born.

And who can forget one of the most senior -- and certainly the coolest -- papa of them all: Mick Jagger. The Rolling Stones front man welcomed his eighth child at 74 in December 2016.

Three days after Nielsen’s big announcement she posted a second photo to Instagram of her blossoming bump this time with the caption, 'Happy time. Positive vibes.’

And that’s what we’re sending her -- positive vibes. We’re sure that the proud parents can’t wait to meet bub number five and neither can we.
