The Bachelorette 2018: Brendan Says "Men Would Rather Be Respected Than Loved"

After a wild first night in the Bachelorette mansion that saw bachelors Paddy and Nathan nearly come to blows, Brendan was feeling pretty safe going into the rose ceremony.

Speaking to ten daily over the phone, Brendan's in pretty good spirits about his short-lived Bachelorette journey, despite his surprise early elimination.

He laughs. "Yeah, given there was a punch on, and given that someone was running around yelling that she was ‘fit as …’, I was like ‘okay, I should be safe’," he said, adding": "but at the same time, the decisiveness was appreciated, there are no hard feelings whatsoever."

Signing up for the show because he was "single, and why not?!" Brendan said that "it was worth a crack".

"Modern dating can be pretty confusing, and I figured ‘hey, maybe going on The Bachelorette will be more simple and straightforward’, which it was, because I got a very clear answer, it was great!" he jokes.

In fact, it's not Brendan's first foray into reality television. Previously, he appeared on The Block with his now ex-wife, who went on to hook up with his best friend.

Amidst the pandemonium of the cocktail party, Brendan said that he "did manage to snag a couple of minutes" with Ali, during which time they spoke about their past relationships.

Describing their chat as "pretty frank", Brendan said: "We both knew that we’d been stuffed around by previous partners, so getting a decisive decision upfront was actually appreciated, rather than getting stuffed around like we both had been in the past."

Unlike some of the other guys in the mansion, Brendan said he "found it really hard" to interrupt the conversation Ali was having in order to get that one on one time.

"To interrupt the other guys, yeah, no worries, but when she’s mid-sentence, you feel a bit rude," he shared.

Calling the cocktail party "hectic and somewhat overwhelming" Brendan said that "it got nice and competitive within about 30 seconds".

"I wasn’t prepared for the intensity of 18 blokes competing for one girl," he said. "You’d think that would go without saying, but it was definitely more chaotic than I expected."

Musing on the confrontation between Paddy and Nathan during the cocktail party, Brendan said that he saw it as the guys "fighting for respect" amongst themselves.

"I can’t remember where I heard this, but the way I see it is, ‘Men would rather be respected than loved,’ I think that's the best way to sum it up," he said.

"They were just trying to prove themselves and protect their pride, not wanting that dent in it," he continued. "I think that's why they got so upset in the first place. They got a bit embarrassed, maybe, which guys never like, especially on national TV, especially in front of other blokes."

Asked whether he thinks Ali will find her Mr Right this season, Brendan said that he thinks "she definitely will".

"A hundred percent," he said. "She’s definitely very different to the Honey Badger, she wears her heart on her sleeve."

Brendan went onto say that after getting to know some of the guys vying for her heart "pretty well, pretty quickly", that it'll be a tough choice for Ali in the end.

"There’s definitely some quality blokes in there," he said. "It’ll be close, I don’t envy her decision at the end at all."

As for whether we'll see Brendan back on our screens in the future, he laughed.

"Ohh, never say never... "
