Flamin' Fake News: Ray Meagher Is Not Leaving Home And Away
It seems the drama is never too far from Summer Bay.
Last week news broke that after 30 years of playing Alf Stewart, Ray Meagher would be leaving Home and Away.
Reports said that Meagher, 74, was discontinuing his on-screen role to return to the stage as Bob in Priscilla Queen Of The Desert.
"It's a privilege to have a job for 30 years and really enjoy it for that time," Meagher told New Idea magazine.
He also said he is looking forward to returning to the role of Bob.
"I always think Bob is like Alf on Valium! He’s more of a laid-back character than Alf," he said.
"I never thought in my wildest dreams I’d ever do a big musical like Priscilla, because singing and dancing are not my forte, but I just love it! It’s fantastic entertainment."
Just as we were preparing to farewell the final original cast member from Summer Bay, one of Meagher's co-stars Lynne McGranger, who plays Irene Roberts, said the whole thing was a load of codswallop.
In an interview with The Colum McGrath Breakfast Show on Clare FM, McGranger said she knows for sure Meagher will be back on set and ready to film in just under seven weeks time.
"He will be back in seven weeks’ time," she said.
"Now, unless I’m in the dark about it, which I don’t think I am because I saw him yesterday on set and I was talking to him and I’m sure he would have told me -- he’s not retiring at all.
"He’s just gone off to do a show for seven weeks and then he’s back."
Well then. Looks like Ray Meagher is just doing two acting jobs at once.
What a bloody treasure.
