Emmy Rossum To Leave Shameless After Season 9

"I know you will continue on without me, for now."

In an emotional Facebook post, Emmy Rossum has announced she'll be leaving Shameless after Season 9.

Rossum has starred in the Showtime series as Fiona Gallagher since 2011, and in the Facebook post she described how close she had grown to the cast and crew, as well as the fans of the series.

"Unlike Fiona, I’m an only child. I never had a big family. Being ensconced in that messy Gallagher family love is something I’d always dreamed of," Rossum wrote.

"But even off set, it feels real. We’ve watched the kids grow up into the strong, talented, independent human beings that they are," she said, adding: "I taught Emma to shave her legs. I was there when Ethan learned to drive. Shanola and Jeremy and Joan and Bill danced at my wedding in New York last year."

Showtime's head of programming confirmed the actor's exit from the series saying, "We are filled with an overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude for Emmy’s inspired work on our series, of course in front of the camera but also behind it."

In 2016 Rossum clashed with Warner Bros. Television who produce the series after she attempted to negotiate to eliminate the pay gap between herself and her co-star William H. Macy.

The studio and Rossum came to an agreement prior to Season 8 after negotiations stalled when the actor was asking for more than Macy to make up for the seven seasons where he was earning more than her.

During the contract dispute Rossum's co-star Macy told TMZ it was "about f**king time, don't you think?" saying that he and Rossum do the same amount of work, joking that the only thing he had over her was that he was "better looking".

The series recently celebrated its 100th episode with Rossum writing, "We have made over 100 hours of television. That’s no small feat. There’s a new study that says it takes 100 hours to become friends with someone."

"I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told," she said, "I will always be rooting for my family."

"Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block."

Season 9 of Shameless will premiere later this year. Read Rossum's full Facebook post here.
