Jacki Weaver To Star In New Stan Original Series Bloom
Blooming this summer!
Aussie streaming service Stan announced on Monday that two-time Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver is set to star in their newest original series, Bloom.
Weaver will be joined by an all-star cast including Byran Brown, Phoebe Tonkin, Ryan Korr, Daniel Henshall and Sam Reid.
The six-part series has already started production in Victoria, with John Curran directing.
According to the release, the series is set a year after a flood devastates a country town, killing five locals but revealing a new, mysterious plant with the ability to restore youth. The plant will turn the town on its head, driving some to kill in order to keep its powers for themselves.
Stan's Chief Content Officer Nick Forward called the series the streaming platform's "biggest Original yet", while commending the all-star cast and director.
The series' creator Glen Dolman described Bloom as a "gothic fairytale" which "offers the wonder and wish fulfilment of returning to your physical prime".
"With heightened energy, passions and desires -- but with a dramatic price: your deepest regrets become your uncontrollable compulsions. These conflicting obsessions make our “rejuvenated” characters clash, sometimes violently, and give us the gothic aspect of our story, which -- while grounded and emotional -- also operates as an escapist, cinematic, six-hour feature with mystery, humour and horror."
Since launching in 2015, Stan has continued to dedicate itself to releasing original local programming and Bloom joins the line-up that includes Wolf Creek, No Activity, The Other Guy, Romper Stomper and the platform's first original film, The Second.
The platform defied expectations of the difficult marketplace to offer as a local alternative to streaming giant Netflix. Offering a slate of local programming and co-productions, the most recent numbers indicate Stan has over 1.1 million subscribers.
Meanwhile their global competitor has faced criticism for having been in Australia for several years without investing in any local content. In May last year Netflix announced their first original Australian series Tidelands.
Both streaming services seem to be eyeing Australia's love for genre content, with both Bloom and Tidelands being set around small town/villages dealing with sci-fi elements.
Bloom will be released on Stan this summer and will be distributed internationally by Sony Pictures Television.
