A Never Before Heard Demo Of John Lennon's Imagine Has Been Found

The stripped-back version will feature on an upcoming box set.

A massive, 140 track box-set celebration of John Lennon's 1971 Imagine LP is hitting shelves later this year, and part of that whopping collection includes a never-before heard demo of the iconic track.

Set to release in October, Imagine: the Ultimate Collection will span over six discs and feature remixed, remastered and raw studio mixes as well as "unheard demos, rare outtakes and isolated track elements".

If that wasn't enough, there'll also be a doco that looks deeper into some of the tracks. The entire project was overseen by Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono, featured in the intro of a 120-page book included in the set.

"Imagine was created with immense love and concern for the children of the world," Ono wrote, "I hope you enjoy it".

And fans are definitely set to enjoy it with the paired-down, never-before released version of "Imagine" being teased ahead of the collection's release.

According to Rolling Stone the demo was found by an audio engineer in the Lennon family archives in early 2016, completely by accident.

"There’s a one-inch, eight-track [reel] that says nothing more on the Ascot Sound label than John Lennon, the date, and the engineer, Phil McDonald, with ‘demo’ on the spine," engineer Rob Stevens wrote in a statement adding, "It was true serendipity".

The collection will also feature two films by Lennon and Ono, Imagine and Gimme Some Truth: The Making of John Lennon's Imagine, both re-released and remastered.

The release announcing the collection called it a "long-overdue and fitting tribute to one of the most important songs, albums and creative collaborations of the 20th century".

John & Yoko’s message is as universal and pertinent today as it was when the album was created and arguably needed more now than ever.

The collection will be released on October 5, just days before what would have been Lennon's 76th birthday, with Ono releasing Imagine John Yoko, a personal compilation, on his birthday on the 9th.
