Demi Lovato Breaks Down While Performing 'Sober' For The First Time

As Demi choked back tears, the crowd chanted "We love you! We love you!" in support.

Last Friday, Demi Lovato surprised fans with the release of her new song "Sober".

Captioning the song's release "My truth..." on Twitter, Demi revealed that she had relapsed after six years of sobriety with the lyrics, "I'm sorry I'm not sober anymore".

As she performed the song live for the first time at Rock in Rio in Lisbon, Demi broke down as she sang the lyrics "I'm sorry for the fans I lost who watched me fall again / I wanna be a role model / but I'm only human".

Cheered on by the crowd, she was able to regain her composure and make it through the rest of the emotional ballad, in which she apologises to her parents, her fans, and herself for breaking her sobriety.

After the performance, the crowd chanted "We love you! We love you! We love you!"

Tweeting about it later, Demi said that she was "a new person with a new life" and thanked "everyone who has supported [her] throughout this journey".

"It will never be forgotten," she wrote.

Demi has been open about her battles with drug and alcohol addition and mental illness, and celebrated six years of sobriety back in March.

She first entered treatment in 2011 for bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm and addiction.  In her YouTube documentary Simply Complicated, Demi revealed that she relapsed after treatment, before entering a sober living facility.
