Netflix To Snap Up Zac Efron's Ted Bundy Biopic For $12M

Streaming giant Netflix is reportedly in talks to purchase rights to Zac Efron's upcoming thriller 'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,' which chronicles the crimes of notorious serial killer Ted Bundy.

The controversial film was featured at the Sundance Film Festival -- which wrapped up on Sunday -- with Netflix moving swiftly to secure a deal shortly after according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It's reported that the $12 million deal supposedly includes rights for the US along with "some international rights" -- which hopefully includes Australia.

The platform intends to drop the highly-anticipated flick ahead of the awards season in September to put star Efron in the running for an Oscar.

If Netflix successfully procures the Joe Berlinger-directed feature it will sit alongside Berlinger's other Ted Bundy project, a docu-series titled Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes.

Following Extremely Wicked's world premiere back in January, the film -- and former teen heartthrob Efron -- drew criticism for romanticising what was, in reality, a series of horrific and brutal crimes committed by a cold and calculating psychopath.

Berlinger has since spoken out in defence of the film, telling Bustle that the accusations that the film glorifies a killer is a "very naive and knee-jerk reaction."

"Because if you actually watch the movie, the last thing we’re doing is glorifying him. He gets his due at the end, but we’re portraying the experience of how one becomes a victim to that kind of psychopathic seduction," he said.

Extremely Wicked also stars Lily Collins as Bundy's longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, who refused to believe the truth about her partner for years. Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich, Jim Parsons and Angela Sarafyan round out the cast.
