There's Going To Be A Live-Action Remake Of 'The Hunchback Of Notre Dame'

Disney is slowly remaking every animated film in its archive.

And according to VarietyThe Hunchback Of Notre Dame is next on the studio's list of recycled project ideas that are guaranteed to win big at the box office.

So far, Disney has live action reboots of Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast and The Jungle Book, with Aladdin, Lilo & Stitch and Mulan among the reboots currently in the works.

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is now reportedly in the early stages of development, with actor Josh Gad involved as a producer.

Gad -- who starred as LeFou in the recent Beauty and The Beast film -- could also take on the film's titular role, according to Variety.

Based on Victor Hugo's classic 1831 book Notre-Dame de Paris, the tale of the bell ringing hunchback, Quasimodo, has been recreated on the screen a bunch of times -- starting with a short silent film in 1905 called Esmerelda.

The last live-action film of the Parisian tale was made back in 1956, with Anthony Quinn (Zorba The Greek) playing the misunderstood protagonist.

Disney made a successful animated version of Hunchback in 1996, using the vocal talents of Jason Alexander as Hugo. It would have been right around the same time that the actor was filming the eighth season of Seinfeld and George Costanza was running The Susan Foundation. Weird!

And, because it was the mid-90s and voice actors were, mostly, favoured for animated parts over A-list regular actors, Esmerelda was played by the supremely talented Mary Kay Bergman.

Bergman -- who passed away in 2011 -- voiced parts in Beauty and The Beast, Captain Planet, Hercules and nearly all the female voices in South Park including the mothers of Cartman, Stan and Kyle.
