Anne Hathaway Might End Up Playing The Grand High Witch
Anne Hathaway has reportedly been offered the most important role in 'The Witches' reboot.
The Roald Dahl book was first adapted for the screen in 1990 and starred Anjelica Huston as the grand high witch with Jane Horrocks (aka Bubbles from Absolutely Fabulous) as her goody-two-shoes assistant.
And look, not everyone is on board with the idea of the Les Misérables actress believably snatching a wig off her head and screaming "You dare to argue with ME?" at a room full of children-hating, square-toed witches.
Sure, Hathway is a talented, Oscar-winning actress but she's just missing that witchy je ne sais quoi that the story about poisoning kids and turning them into mice needs and deserves.
Anjelica Huston will forever be synonymous with the grand high witch role -- but surely there were a few witchier options available to the casting director than Anne Hathaway.
The remake is being directed by Robert Zemeckis who was behind blockbuster films like Forrest Gump, Back To The Future and Romancing The Stone. He also made Death Becomes Her, so we know he has access to Meryl Streep's phone number.
Variety is reporting that Hathaway has been offered the gig but is having trouble deciding between The Witches and an untitled Sesame Street project.
So hopefully, we'll see Anne hopping into a custom-made Big Bird outfit instead of a pair of purple contact lenses in 2019.
