Idris Elba Joins The Cats Musical Adaptation As The Big Bad Cat
While the internet is still debating if he should play James Bond or not, it looks like Idris Elba has picked up a surprising new role in the upcoming film adaptation of the musical 'Cats'.
According to Variety, Elba was announced as joining the already star-studded lineup that includes the likes of Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden and Taylor Swift.
The film is an adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-running musical Cats, which imagines the lives and backstories of a group of cats -- the Jellicles -- ahead of their annual gathering where they pick a cat to be reincarnated.
Yeah, look, it's a little wild and literally ends with the chosen cat ascending a staircase that like... comes down from the moon. So this movie is gonna be wild.
The musical is the fourth-longest-running show in the history of Broadway -- beaten by The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago and The Lion King. The musical was based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, which also makes up most of the lyrics in the musical.
Deadline reports that Elba joins the crew of cats in the role of Macavity, the big bad cat of the musical. Well, we say the "big bad" only in that he's the closest thing the musical has to a villain.
Basically, they sing a song about how he's bad, then he and a few other cats do a sexy cat dance fight scene where ultimately Macavity is defeated (via threatening leotard dance) and the Jellicles are able to get on with their reincarnation selection.
The film will be directed by Tom Hooper, who is no stranger to star-studded musical adaptations after he directed the 2012 Oscar-winning Les Misérables.
Meanwhile, if you're looking to see Elba out of cat spandex, he's currently filming the Fast and the Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw with The Rock and Jason Statham. Meow.
