'Lost' Star Dominic Monaghan Joins 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

From a deserted island to a galaxy far, far away.

Dominic Monaghan has joined the cast of the upcoming ninth and final installment in the Skywalker sagaStar Wars: Episode IX.

However the actor's role in the J.J. Abrams-directed film is not yet known.

The 41-year-old Brit has confirmed the casting on his Twitter account that same day.

Monaghan is no stranger to huge projects, having starred in both Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings (LOTR) trilogy and the Abrams-produced hit TV series Lost.

Fans have so far been positive about his addition to the much-loved franchise.

Even his old LOTR cast-mate Elijah Wood showed his support.

The announcement comes after a vocal campaign by the actor to appear in a Star Wars movie, which he began after Abrams signed up for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.

“Give me a lightsaber, I’ll do anything,” Monaghan pleaded in interview at the time.

WHAT DID HE DO? It would be good to add a line or visual to help support this.

Production of the third and final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy commenced in early August, but it's not yet known when Monaghan will join his cast-mates Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac among others.

Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams, all original Star Wars actors, are also set to return.

As reported in July, Abrams will use unreleased footage of the late Carrie Fisher from The Force Awakens to include her character Leia in the film.

Star Wars: Episode IX is expected in theatres on December 20, 2019.
