The Crown Star Is Unrecognisable In The Girl In The Spider's Web Trailer
Lisbeth Salander is back.
It's a huge step away from her royal garb and stiff upper lip -- Claire Foy is near unrecognisable in the first trailer for The Girl In the Spider's Web.
Based on the Millennium book series by Stieg Larsson, Foy is stepping into the role of Lisbeth Salander, who was played by Rooney Mara in the 2011 adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Okay so this is kind of confusing but we're going to try and explain what's going on with this series.
In 2009 a Swedish version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was released starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth. She proceeded to play the role in two following film, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.
In 2011 David Fincher remade Dragon Tattoo with Rooney Mara in the lead alongside Daniel Craig. After the success of the first film Fincher was keen to continue the series, hoping to shoot sequels "back to back". But even with the best intentions things don't always go to plan, and eventually the studio announced they'd be doing a "reboot" of the franchise.
That's where Spider's Web comes in. Curiously it's the first of the Millennium series to have been written after the death of the original author by a totally different guy.
So Spider's Web stars a whole new cast, with a new director and is based on the fourth book in the series -- the first by author David Lagercrantz. Talk about a tangled web indeed.
Foy really broke onto the scene when she starred in Netflix's series The Crown, where she played a young Queen Elizabeth II alongside Matt Smith. Recently Foy was dragged into a controversy when a producer on the series revealed she was being paid less than Smith.
After the news came to light, the makers of the series made sure Foy was not only paid parity with her male co-star but that she was also back-paid over $350,000 to make up for the difference in salary. Yass Queen (Elizabeth II). Foy and Smith wrapped up on the series and their roles have now been re-cast for the third season in an effort to age the characters realistically.
The Girl in the Spider's Web is set to open in cinemas November 8.
