Modern Family's Sarah Hyland Reveals Shock Suicide Battle

Sarah Hyland, who plays Haley Dunphy on the hit series, has spoken out about her mental health battles following health issues over the years.

In a candid interview with Self magazine, the starlet opened up about her struggle with kidney dysplasia, which is a condition that occurs in the womb when one or both of kidneys don't develop correctly.

While the 28-year-old received a kidney from her father when she was 21, her body rejected the organ, which she says led to severe depression.

"I had gone through [my whole life] always being a burden," Hyland said, adding, "When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it almost feels like it's your fault. It's not. But it does."

"For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn't want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad," she said.

She then underwent dialysis and later another transplant, this time from her brother. Following the surgery, she revealed she is now "stable".

"I'm thriving. I'm super happy with life," she said.

It's not the only illness the star suffers from -- she spoke about being diagnosed with the debilitating illness endometriosis, and between the two conditions, she's undergone 16 surgeries in total -- with six being in the past 16 months or so.

These surgeries included the second kidney transplant, laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis, and surgery to correct an abdominal hernia.

It's been a trying year for the actress, with her cousin Trevor Canady killed by an alleged drunk driver in November. Her uncle, who was also hit by the driver, is currently in hospital recovering from serious injuries.

Following the tragedy, Hyland posted a link to a GoFundMe created by another cousin but was immediately dragged by Twitter users for not fronting the donation cost herself.

Following relentless abuse from trolls, the Modern Family star said she would be "going offline" for a while, adding that the negative comments had "broken her."
