Mindy Kaling Hits Out At Trump's Plan To End Birthright Citizenship
Mindy Kaling has slammed US President Donald Trump's plan to end citizenship rights for anyone born on American soil.
President Trump said in a new interview that he plans to sign an executive order that would override an amendment to the US Constitution that was ratified 150 years ago.
"We're the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States ... with all of those benefits," Trump said in an interview with Axios.
"It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. And it has to end."
Kaling has strongly criticised President Trump on Twitter, pointing out that the plan would place the children of immigrants to the US in a vulnerable position.
"Wait. I was born in the United States to two Indian professionals who later became proud citizens of this country, " she wrote.
"So... now I would be a citizen of India?" she asked on Twitter. "My contribution to this country would be as a foreigner as no rights?"
Celebrities including George Takei, Alyssa Milano and Roxane Gay have also hit out at Trump's plan to override the Constitution.
The LA Times reported that legal scholars are arguing that Trump does not have the power to remove the amendment and that the announcement is more of a "political stunt".
The 14th amendment was written in 1868 and says that "All persons born or naturalised in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States."
