Nicole Kidman Says Tom Cruise Marriage Protected Her From Sexual Harassment
Nicole Kidman has given a rare insight into her marriage with former husband and fellow actor, Tom Cruise.
Speaking to New York Magazine's The Cut, the Aussie star got candid, saying that although she married the Mission Impossible star for love, it also provided "protection" from sexual harassment in Hollywood.
"Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I'm always reluctant to talk about, because I'm married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful," the 51-year-old said.
"That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn't power for me -- it was protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it's almost like I had to grow up."
She also touched on the topic of #MeToo, adding that she had her own "#MeToo moments since [she] was little," though she declined to elaborate further.
"Do they come out in my work? Absolutely. I'm open and raw," she said. "I want to have my well of experience and emotion tapped into, used -- and I'm not just talking about sexual harassment. I'm talking about loss, death, the full array of life. But it has to be by the right people so it's not abused again," she said.
Nicole and Tom were married in 1990 and later adopted two children, Isabella and Connor, before their split over a decade later in 2001.
She went on to marry country crooner Keith Urban in 2006 and have two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, while Tom married actress Katie Holmes in 2006 before divorcing in 2012. They have one daughter, Suri, together.
