Eminem Reveals The 'Petty' Reason He's Feuding With Machine Gun Kelly
It's not about the tweet MGK wrote about Em's daughter Hailie, after all.
In case you're not up to date with your white bread rap beefs (rap chickens??), Eminem and Machine Gun Kelly are in the midst of a feud.
Things kicked off a few weeks ago when Em dropped his surprise album Kamikaze, a mere eight months after his last LP, Revival, was met with mixed reviews.
On Kamikaze, Eminem came for... well... pretty much everyone, and Machine Gun Kelly made the extensive list of people Em took issue with, as Em rapped on "Lucky You": “And I’m talkin’ to you, but you already know who the fuck you are, Kelly/I don’t use sublims and sure as fuck don’t sneak-diss/But keep commenting on my daughter Hailie”.
Listeners were quick to dig up a 2012 tweet from Machine Gun Kelly in which he called Em's daughter Hailie "hot as fuck" -- despite her being 16 at the time -- and to cite it as the origin of their beef.
In a new interview with Sway Calloway discussing his Kamikaze project, Eminem discussed his feud with MGK
“[That tweet] never hit my radar and then one day, you know, you go down the fucking wormhole of YouTube or whatever right? So I see ‘Machine Gun Kelly talks about Eminem’s daughter.’ So, I’m like ‘What the fuck?’ I click on it… he starts doing a press run basically about Hailie. I’m like, ‘What the fuck? Yo, my man better chill',” he explained.
Em went on, clarifying: “That’s not why I dissed him. The reason I dissed him is actually a lot more petty than that”.
Turns out, Em was mad because after MGK tweeted about Hailie, he went on to tell the press that Em had "blackballed" him in the industry, going as far as to ban him from playing on his radio station, Shade 45.
"The reason that I dissed him is because he got on -- first what he said ‘I’m the greatest rapper alive since my favorite rapper banned me from Shade 45′ or whatever he said, right? Like I’m trying to hinder his career. I don’t give a fuck about your career. You think I actually fucking think about you? You know how many fucking rappers are better than you? You’re not even in the fucking conversation.”
After dissing MGK on Kamikaze, MGK was quick to respond with a diss track of his own, titled "Rap Devil", a play on Em's song "Rap God", in which he calls the 45-year-old rapper old. MGK went on to tweet that he was "standing up for... [his] generation" with the track.
Eminem said that although he'd heard MGK's track, and even called it "not bad, for him", he hasn't decided whether he's going to respond yet, because he doesn't want to give the rapper any more attention than he deserves.
“Now, I’m in this fucking weird thing because I’m like I have to answer this motherfucker and every time I do that, it makes that person -- as irrelevant as people say I am in hip hop -- I make them bigger by getting into this thing where I’m like, 'I want to destroy him',” he explained. “But I also don’t want to make him bigger because now you’re a fucking enemy. I’ll leave it at that.”
