The actor's lawyer has refuted the accusations.

French actor Gérard Depardieu has been accused of sexual assault and rape by a 22-year-old actress who filed a complaint earlier this week, according to French news outlets.

An investigation has begun to look into the allegations that Depardieu assaulted the young unnamed actress between August 7 -13.

The 69-year-old actor's lawyer, Hervé Temime, told French news channel BFM that his client refuted any accusations.

"I regret the public nature of this process which poses a major prejudice to Gérard Depardieu," Temime said, "whose innocence I am convinced will be recognised".

Depardieu has starred in more than 180 films, making him one of France's biggest stars who recently starred in the Netflix series Marseille.

Despite being one of the country's biggest stars, he has also attracted his fair share of controversies. In 2011 Depardieu was thrown off a flight from Paris to Dublin when he ignored the seat belt sign to urinate in a bottle at the back of the plane.

In 2012 he was accused of assaulting a motorist, then later that year arrested for driving while intoxicated after falling from his scooter. In December 2012 Depardieu became a resident of Belgium after becoming a vocal critic of France's high taxes. He has also been criticised for his close friendship with Russian president Vladimir Putin who granted him Russian citizenship in 2013.
