Madonna Clarifies Her Strange VMAs 'Tribute' To Aretha Franklin

After she was taken to task for the utterly strange speech, Madonna clarified her speech on Instagram.

Just days after the iconic Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, passed away there was no word as to if there would be an official tribute at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Watching the show, however, it looked like MTV had secured another music legend to give a modest tribute to Franklin before presenting an award. And how wrong we were.

Stepping up to the mic to present the Video of the Year award, Madonna told a long, rambling story about herself -- loosely orbiting Franklin's influence on her career.

Viewers slammed the "tribute" as self-obsessed and odd, as Madge told stories of being mistaken for a sex worker, being robbed and auditioning for two French dudes who wanted to make her a star.

"I could see that they did not take me seriously. And why should they? Some skinny white girl is going to come up here and belt out a song by one of the greatest soul singers that ever lived? A cappella? I said, ‘Bitch, I’m Madonna'."

Following the backlash, Madonna posted a photo on Instagram of herself and Video of the Year winner Camila Cabello, clarifying her side of the story.

"I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin," the 60-year-old captioned the photo.

"I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment."

Despite the clarification, many are still furious the only tribute the VMAs seemed to offer Franklin was a brief tale about Madonna by Madonna, though it should come as no surprise.
